MALACHI

‘Love Grown Cold’

Homework

Before Session One

Read through Malachi several times this week

Read Nehemiah 13

Malachi prophesied during the time of Nehemiah - what similarities can you see in the Nehemiah 13 and the words of Malachi?

When did Malachi write this prophesy?

How long had Israel been back in the land?

If you have time read Haggai and Zechariah

Haggai and Zechariah had both prophesied that God’s blessings would come upon the people of Israel but those prophecies had still not come to fulfilment.

What can you see in the words of Malachi that show that the faith of the Jews had eroded?

Before Session Two

Read Malachi 1-2 several times this week

Divide those chapters into segments

Do you notice any repeated phrases?

If so how does this help you to understand the message of Malachi?

How does God explain His love for Israel?

How would you explain this to another believer?

Who is God primarily speaking to in the segments you have found?

In which section does He turn His attention and to whom?

Can you find similar charges against the Church in the NT Scriptures?

What about today - are you able to see any of the same situations that might cause God’s heart to be burdened by you personally or by the Church as a whole?

Finally, how does God define a ‘true priest’ ?

Read 1 Peter 2:1-10

How is the believer described here?

How does this tally with God’s expectation of the priests in Malachi’s day?

Before Session Three

Read Malachi 1-3 several times this week

If you haven’t already done so make a list of the charges of God against His people and His priests.

Make a comparison between Malachi 2:5-7 and the words and behaviour of the priests in Malachi’s day

What do you see? Be specific

Make a comparison between 1 Peter 2:1-10 and 2 Peter 1:1-11

For example where might you find the ‘precious and magnificent promises’ of Christ?

Notice the instructions in both passages and the reasons for them.

What would you want to share with another believer about these Scriptures?

What do they reveal to us?

What do they instruct or encourage us to do?

How well do you think this message is preached in the Church in our day?

Give some examples from the texts you have read this week that you can relate directly to your own experience of ‘church’.

What do you think God is calling you to do? Be specific

Will you do it?

Before Session Four

Read Malachi 1-4 several times this week

Last week you listed the charges of God against His people

Think about the response of the Israelites to the word of the Lord through Malachi

How would you sum up the attitude of Israel and in particular the priests to these charges of God?

Do you think the Lord might bring similar charges against parts of the church in our day?

Read Hebrews 8:1-13

Which is the ‘first’ covenant the Lord referring to?

And the new covenant?

What does God say about the old covenant in Hebrews 8:13?

How do you reconcile that with Matthew 5:17-18?

Read Malachi 4:1-6

What ‘day’ is being referred to here?

Why do you think they were instructed to ‘remember the Law of Moses’?

Think through the whole oracle of Malachi and ask the Lord to show you His heart for His people Israel - then ask Him how he would have you pray for them.
